In 1998, Professor Sten Lindahl of the Nobel Prize Committee, stated that Dr. Robert Furchgott …
... “in a brilliant experiment – made a key discovery which set the stage for future scientific developments.”
What did Dr. Furchgott discover?
He discovered how the body causes blood vessels to relax when it needs to increase blood flow. He found that the inner lining of blood vessels, called the endothelium, release tiny bubbles of a gas called nitric oxide, and that is what causes the blood vessels to become more flexible and expand.
That may sound rather technical and boring at first, but this discovery opened the door to understanding how we can avoid high blood pressure or ailments related to poor circulation, which is just about all of them – and THAT is very interesting, indeed.
