Almost Fire Sale
The warehouse for Reality Zone, our online bookstore, is just a few miles from my home in Thousand Oaks, California – right in the middle of a cluster of mega fires that recently swept across a hundred-thousand acres and destroyed four-hundred homes. My neighborhood was evacuated two days ago and, as I write this (Monday, November 12), I am in Reseda, about 20 miles to the north. My home has been spared so far, but I was told that fire came within five blocks of my place. One of the fires stopped about 800 feet from our warehouse. They say the fires are not contained, and many hot spots remain. More winds are expected tonight, so everyone remains vigilant. Bottom line: Pat and I are safe and feel very lucky. This is happening just as we are in the middle of closing our warehouse and moving our inventory to a fulfillment center in the Chicago area. The reasons for that are lower overhead and a more centralized location to enable better shipping rates and faster delivery for US customers. To minimize the cost of moving over a hundred titles from Thousand Oaks to Chicago, we were preparing a ‘warehouse moving’ sale, and it was scheduled for Thanksgiving week. Just as I was settling down to design the sale, the fires came. When we had to evacuate the warehouse, we thought the sale would have to be postponed - or perhaps even canceled if we ended up with ashes instead of inventory - but that area now is off the endangered list, so we are back on track. We are grateful we didn’t lose anything or have charred facilities to repair, so it would be misleading to call this a fire sale. I am not comfortable with the Black-Friday theme – and a warehouse-moving sale sounds rather dull – so I decided to call this an Almost Fire Sale primarily as an excuse to let everyone know that we are safe and now moving ahead with our plans to improve Reality Zone. It is now Tuesday, November 13. We made it back to our home in Thousand Oaks today and I am happy to report that our neighborhood was untouched by the fire. What a relief, but here is a photo taken from the car as we approached the freeway off-ramp about a half-mile from home. This is a new flareup that started about 30 minutes ago, and the wind just shifted in our direction. The excitement continues.  It is now Wednesday, November 14.
